7 good reasons to go to Art Basel Paris, international contemporary art fair

Art Basel Paris 2023 - International Contemporary Art Fair

After decades under the aegis of FIAC, the fair has now been replaced by a Parisian version of the famous Art Basel fair, called Paris+. Why go? Here are 7 good reasons to attend the Paris+ international contemporary art fair by Art Basel.

what you need to know about paris+ 2023

Dates and venue

The event for lovers of contemporary art takes place from October 20 to October 22, 2023 at the ephemeral Grand Palais for the general public, in the 7th arrondissement. The Vernissage Day takes place on October 19, and VIP Days are held on October 18 and 22.

And don't forget, in 2023, the international fair will be taking over several of Paris's most emblematic venues. To make sure you don't miss a thing, head for the Jardin des Tuileries, Place Vendôme, Chapelle des Petits-Augustins, Palais d'Iéna and the forecourt of the Institut de France.

The exhibition program

Under the supervision of Annabelle Ténèze, the exhibition entitled "La Cinquième Saison" (The Fifth Season) will be installed at the Jardin des Tuileries. This exhibition examines the concept of the garden as a place of interaction between mineral, aquatic and plant elements.

Swiss artist Urs Fischer is exhibiting a work entitled "Wave" (2018), a five-meter-high aluminum sculpture. This piece, originally created from clay pressed and kneaded by the artist, has been enlarged to highlight the imprints left in the original material.

British artist Jessica Warboys will be presenting an exhibition entitled "THIS TAIL GROWS AMONG RUINS", looking at the intersections between culture and nature. The exhibition will feature the video work of the same name, accompanied by canvas collages created using natural pigments and wild water.

Daniel Buren and Michelangelo Pistoletto will collaborate on a joint exhibition, under the artistic direction of Matthieu Poirier.
"VERS DES HORIZONS NOUVEAUX (2023) is an imposing sculpture created by American artist Sheila Hicks. The work takes the form of a six-metre-high column, clad in multicoloured threads resistant to water and wear. The bright colors of this artistic creation will enter into dialogue with the soft hues of the square's surrounding buildings.

This year, the Centre Pompidou will be hosting and partnering the Conversations event, to be held in the heart of the Marais district. For the second year running, the Conversations event, organized by Pierre-Alexandre Mateos and Charles Teyssou, will feature nine debates devoted to topics of contemporary cultural expression.

The program will spotlight avant-garde figures such as Chantal Akerman and Antonin Artaud, while exploring contemporary myth-makers such as Walt Disney Studios and drag culture. It will also examine the links between Paris, the Maghreb and the Caribbean, while returning to familiar formats from previous editions of Art Basel Conversations, such as Premiere Artist Talk and The Artist and The Collector.

WHY VISIT ART BASEL PARIS THIS YEAR?

Art Basel, or Paris+ if we want to be exact, is organized in three distinct sectors that promote different aspects of contemporary art creation. Built around a separate building, the fair is an opportunity to get acquainted with works from all over the world, but also to take a closer look at what is being done in France. The main goal of the art fair is to make discover or rediscover modern and contemporary art to the general public as well as to art lovers, far from the auction rooms.

  1. The Grand Palais

The event is held like the FIAC in the Grand Palais. However, during the building's renovation, Art Basel is held in the ephemeral Grand Palais.

The building hosting the exhibition is worth the trip in itself. Designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and built by GL Events, the structure fits in perfectly with the Champ-de-Mars. Designed in an eco-responsible manner, it combines a PEFC wood frame with a skin made of a fabric with exceptional thermal, acoustic and breathable properties. The building is also modular, which allows it to be adapted to the many types of events scheduled. Its ample volumes and rounded lines echo the silhouettes of the Petit and Grand Palais.

  2. "Galeries": quality, originality and diversity of the works of art

The "Galleries" sector is the largest of the event. You will find works of extraordinary quality, in a wide variety of genres and techniques. Painting and sculpture, of course, but also drawing, photography or digital art, all types of mediums are present.

  3. "Emerging galleries": to the discovery of rising talents

More modest in size, the "Emerging Galleries" sector is made up of smaller structures, which put forward names that are not very well known at the moment. But don't be deceived! Among these young artists whose work is still confidential are nuggets not to be missed.

  4. Exhibitions in five iconic Paris locations

In addition to the Champ-de-Mars premises, the organizers are also playing the off-site exhibition card, taking over the Jardin des Tuileries, Place Vendôme, the Chapelle des Petits-Augustins, the Palais d'Iéna and the forecourt of the Institut de France. What better way to (re)visit the capital!

  5. Artworks that come from far away

This international event is an unparalleled opportunity to encounter works from distant galleries. Works that you would not normally have the opportunity to see. This year, 154 galleries from 33 countries are represented.

  6. (Re)discover what is done in France

Paris+ will also be an opportunity to renew your view of current creation in France. The Parisian galleries are particularly well represented! All display works that reinvent the city and the Parisian artistic landscape, inviting you to take a fresh look at the capital. A true national museum!

  7. Artworks for all tastes

Given the large number of exhibitors, artists, and modes of creation represented, you can expect a fair teeming with creative variety. You're sure to be impressed by them. Everyone started to ask the question "How can I exhibit at FIAC?" and they are finally invited.
