WHAT IS POP ART PAINTING?

Short history of pop art painting

Pop art was born in the middle of the 50s in Great Britain, but it comes from the United States, more precisely in New York, although it arrived later. This art movement evolved from the abstract expressionism movement, which some painters considered too rigid and pretentious.

Pop art comes from "popular art". Indeed, it aims to desacralize the work in a concern of democratization of art: the work of art is no longer unique, and the canvas is duplicated (we remember Warhol who painted his paintings by the dozen).

It is no longer about noble or rare subjects, artists draw their inspiration from their vision of the consumer society of their time: Mickey Mouse and Marilyn Monroe are the most famous subjects. They also draw their subjects from the advertising society.

For example, Warhol's paintings used everyday objects, such as a carton of Campbell's soup. This tonic art of the 1960s consumes a real break with art such as one conceived it!
This painting style is coming back into fashion. Umberto Eco will even say: "In the Pop-Art, the Kitsch is redeemed and raised to a new state of aesthetic dignity".

A colorful style, mirror of a new consumer society.

Techniques revisited in accordance with industrial progress

In the early 1960s, techniques evolved and artists began to use new products that were emerging on the market: their preference was for acrylic paint, which dries rapidly, and silk-screen printing, which features the use of stencils. These are now rather industrial techniques.

This earned the artists the criticism of some who did not recognize in these techniques the noble materials of art. The result is dynamic: vivid, primary colors, out of step with reality, simple lines, and sometimes rough layouts that are free of details, like graffiti.

FAMOUS POP-ART ARTISTS

The pioneers of the art movement of pop art are considered to be:

  • Andy Warhol, an advertising man by profession, raised popular culture to the level of art. He is known as the "the Pope of Pop" as he is recognized as the master in his field. His trademark will be the screen-printed photography.
We know his Marilyn Monroe series, which has been so industrialized and commercialized that it can now be found in every decoration store.

  • Roy Lichtenstein draws the subjects of his paintings in the comics. His mission is to achieve "a style as superficial as possible". However, in his works, we can see concerned characters, and tearful women, which gives his pop-art paintings a highly expressive dimension.

Other than those American artists, there are many names in the pop art world such as James Rosenquist, Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Lawrence Alloway, Eduardo Paolozzi, Robert Rauschenberg...

MODERN POP ART PAINTING

The artistic movement became a real fashion that persists today. 90s and 80s pop art continues to influence today’s artists.
Modern pop art artists continue to play with bold colors, shapes, and popular culture images to create vibrant and eye-catching works. They can also convey important social and political messages.

American pop art VS English pop art

There are differences between the two styles. English pop art follows the evolutions of American society but looks at it with more distance, of emotions, and most certainly of humor.
The American one is characterized by the culture and the entertainment, of the media as well as of the consumption. It is considered the fruit of experience, the codes are more aggressive and aesthetic.

POP ART WALL DECORATIONS

If you want to add life and color to your walls, street art painting and pop art wall decor are a great choice. Often bold, vibrant, and eye-catching, pop art wall art pieces are perfect for modern living spaces.

They are also very versatile, as they can add a splash of color to a monochromatic space or provide an interesting contrast to an already colorful decor. No matter what is your decorating style, it adds personality and vibrancy to your walls.
