Which kind of artwork for a minimalist interior?

- 10/11/2020
Quelles œuvres d’art pour un intérieur minimaliste2.

For this second autumnal lockdown, Carré d’artistes suggests that you use this time to re-design your decoration and the artwork, which go along with it. By following a different style every week: minimalist, Bohemian, industrial…The first step being: how to adorn minimalist and contemporary lines in a tasteful manner? Let’s move forward with the ideas!

Geometric shapes, white walls, refined objects, this is the contemporary style mantra, which emerged a little over a century ago, due to modernist architects such as Le Corbusier (1887-1965) or Adolf Loos (1870-1933).  Both of them were convinced that “ornament is a crime”, to put it otherwise, one had to come up with an architecture without any moldings or superficial decorative items, to liberate walls and provide air, light and space to inhabitants. Today, their theories and works remain surprisingly modern: all you need to do is visit Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier and see to what extent the latter was ahead of his time and defined a timeless style! Good news for the art fans: white walls are very welcoming to hang paintings. Moreover, contemporary art museums and galleries are often “white cubes”, which help not fowling up the look and focus more on artwork.

TIP N°1 : FULLY INTO ABSTRACT

Why? Because the emergence of abstract painting is contemporary from that of modernist architecture, they go very well together!

To be discovered: Compositions of Hilde Wilms are reminiscent of joyful flat colors with curvy lines and vibrant shapes-ideal to make a living room pleasant.

Calm amateurs? Favor landscape-like visions of Garella, evanescent and perfect for a bedroom.

TIP N°2 : SAY YES TO COLOR

Why? To lop off with the white wall color, don’t hesitate choosing bright-colored paintings. This will trigger a contrast with the wisest of rooms.

To be discovered: Karl Gustavsen and his compositions which make papercutting and acrylic paint communicate. Figurative but without perspective, it leads to light-weight stylized faces and go well with very varied colors.

TIP N°3 : ENLIVEN THE WHOLE WITH A MYSTERIOUS VISION

Why? To directly tune in your decoration on the most audacious contemporary art, don’t forget to throw your entourage off balance, with unexpected images…

To be discovered: Paintings by Sergi Castignani portray very popular scenes-a road where people cycle, a young girl who jumps off a diving board, mountaineers-, while unveiling their strangeness through an atypical viewpoint. Like the beginning of a story and you can write the sequel…

TIP N°4 : THINK GRAPHIC!

Why? White is synonymous with a blank page…Let’s settle this through black!

To be discovered: Black on white portraits by Denny Stoekenbroek highlights the beauty of feminine faces with sensual features, often with a dash of vintage. Half-way between a photographic impression of hyper-realism and quick strokes of comic books, this work will revitalize your indoors.

BONUS ADVISE : WHICH FURNITURE GOES WITH IT ?

Minimalism leads to definite elegance. Careful: to do things properly, favor beautiful materials. A coffee-table made in glass, a big smooth-wooden table and no decor, a transparent vase where you can put some irises, a big couch in brown leather…
