Paintings works garouste

Sculptor, engraver, Gérard Garouste is one of the most important French contemporary painters. He paints mainly around mythology, fairy tales and fables. A look back at an artist who has managed to make his mark in the art world despite his difficult family history and his mental problems, with more than 600 paintings exhibited throughout the world. Gérard Garouste is today considered an emblematic figure of contemporary art. Indeed, he is one of the leading French artists of the 20th century. He also left his mark on the 19th century with his hyper-realistic works. More than just an artist with a raw style, Gérard Garouste practised exclusively humorous drawing. At the end of the 1970s, he decided to turn to figurative painting.  His figurative paintings usually refer to the Holy Scriptures. This is why we are offering a new collection inspired by the artist, an emblem of modern art that we are particularly fond of.

BIOGRAPHY OF Gérard Garouste

He was born on March 10, 1946 in Paris. He was a student at the Collège du Montcel. He met his wife, Elisabeth, who supported him throughout his life, especially through his delirium. He studied at the fine arts school from 1965 to 1972, with Gustave Singier, the abstract painter, as his master. At that time he began to be interested in Marcel Duchamp and conceptual art. A friend of the director Jean-Michel Ribes, he created a large number of stage designs with him and practiced humor drawing. In 1977, at the Palace, he presented the first show of which he was the author, set designer and director. In 1979, he moved to the Eure, but continued to work at the Palace until 1982 as a painter and set designer. It was while he was still attending the Palace, in the late 1970s, that an exhibition of Jean Dubuffet's work as well as works of art brut encouraged him to turn to figurative painting. He is now 76 years old. He continues to leave his mark on the world with his allegorical and mythological paintings.

He exhibited paintings for the first time in 1980 at the Durand-Dessert Gallery with figurative, allegorical and mythological art. In 1982, he exhibited internationally at the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York, then at Leo Castelli and Sperone, as well as at the Zeitgeist exhibition in Berlin, where he was the only French artist invited. He received real recognition from institutions in 1987, when he presented his oils on canvas and acrylics on Indian paper at the CAPC in Bordeaux, then at the Cartier Foundation.

Strengthened by his successes, he realized decors and works for the Elysee Palace, sculptures for the cathedral of Evry, but also the ceiling of the theater of Namur, a magnificent fresco on the walls of the wedding hall of the city hall of Mons and, also, the stained glass windows of Notre-Dame de Talant. In 1989, at Châtelet, he will be in charge of the realization of the stage curtain of the theater.

In 1991, he created La Source, an association located in La Guéroulde, in the Eure region, whose goal is to help children in situations of exclusion or coming from disadvantaged backgrounds to blossom through artistic workshops led by professionals.

In 1996, he received a commission from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France for a monumental work using both paint and wrought iron. He became increasingly interested in sculpture and engraving, as well as in the illustration of universal texts, such as the Haggadah or Don Quixote. In 2001, he presented a project to the Cartier Foundation. Named Ellipse, it is a set of paintings to be mounted on an architecture that he designed. In 2008, he was commissioned by the State to create a model of an Aubusson tapestry. The work, monumental, is 24 m2 and is called The Murex and the Spider. It is installed in the town hall of Aubusson, in the main staircase.

Towards the end of the 1990s, he learned Hebrew and studied the Bible intensively. His figurative works will often refer to it.

In 2009, he published L'Intranquille, an autobiographical account through which he publicly reveals his heavy family history and his psychiatric problems. His father, Henri Auguste Garouste (1919-2008) was a convinced Petainist and anti-Semite who was sentenced in 1945 to pay back the Levitan establishments after having robbed them during the war. Throughout his life, Gérard Garouste did his best to distance himself from his parents and believed that the origin of his mental disorders lay in this family history. He claims to have suffered regular bouts of delusions and depression from the birth of his first child, Guillaume. He was treated in the Paul-Guiraud hospital in Villejuif and Saint-Anne.

Since 2001, he has been represented by the Daniel Templon Gallery. He regularly exhibits there. In 2009, he collaborated with the philosopher Michel Onfray on an exhibition at the media library in Argentan. In 2013 he played alongside Catherine Deneuve in the film Elle s'en va by Emmanuelle Bercot. On December 13, 2013, he was elected to George Mathieu's seat at the Academy of Fine Arts.

AN ART WITH A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE MODERN WORLD

He was inspired by the great classical texts, Ovid's metamorphoses, the apocryphal gospels and the lives of the saints, and created works of art on canvas in order to expose all his expertise to the greatest number of people. He dilutes his creativity bordering on abstraction and his paintings are very rich and powerful. His works bring out his magic in the use of colors, fiery, vivid, especially in his mixtures that go from purple to red.

He participated in exhibitions in 1980 at the Durand-Dessert Gallery, in 1982 at the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York. In 1987, he exhibited at the CAPC in Bordeaux while simultaneously highlighting acrylics on Indian and oils on canvas. The artist enjoys a retrospective at the Pompidou Center. It includes installations, some sculptures and nearly 140 paintings.

What characterizes Garouste's works

The figurative style implies the representation of reality. The artist therefore highlights his art on specific canvases. His style is more or less realistic and naturalistic. Garouste is therefore inspired by nature and what he feels there. Carré d'artistes offers a wide range of figurative paintings.

A PROLIFIC AND VERSATILE ARTIST

Throughout his life, Garouste never stopped creating. In addition to the multitude of paintings he has exhibited around the world, he has been eclectic in the arts he has practiced. Here is a small, non-exhaustive list of his other magnificent works.

Painting

- In 1983, he painted the ceiling of one of the rooms in the presidential apartment at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

- In 1996, he was in charge of the installation of painting and wrought iron for the National Library of France, in Paris.

- In 1999, he painted the ceiling of the foyer of the Royal Theater in Namur, Belgium.

- In 2004, he painted a poster for the 52nd Feria de Nîmes.

- In 2006, he painted a frieze for the wedding hall of the city hall of Mons, Belgium.

Sculpture

- In 1984, he sculpted the Défi du Soleil for the Palais-Royal garden in Paris. It is a bronze sculpture of four meters high representing the Nietzschean duality between the Apollonian and the Dionysian. It gives a strange dreamlike atmosphere to the Saint-Jean basin.

- In 1995, he sculpted a Virgin and Child for the Cathedral of the Resurrection, in Evry. It will be installed in the day chapel.

- In 2006, he sculpts the Garouste Ramp for the town hall of Mons, Belgium. It represents the fight between Saint George and the Dragon, two emblematic figures of the city.

Theater

- In 1969, he designed the sets and costumes for La Loi de Barrabas, by Fernando Arrabal, directed by his friend Jean-Michel Ribes.

- In 1977, he wrote, directed and was in charge of the decoration for Le Classique et l'Indien.

- In 2008, he participates in the rewriting of the Classic and the Indian, with the help of Joel Calmette.

Other

- In he will take care of the stained glass windows of Notre-Dame de Talant, with the help of the glassmaker Pierre-Alain Parot.

- In 2001, he designed the Ellipse in collaboration with the Cartier Foundation. This strange work is composed of a painted sculpture. The not always straight shape of the sculpture gives more life and relief to the fable animals that are painted on it.

- In 2006, he created the Murex and the Spider, a gigantic tapestry referring to Greek mythology, for Aubusson, the capital of tapestry.

Mental health

Many painters are considered crazy and Garouste is no exception to the rule. As he says himself: "I am a painter, and sometimes I am crazy". While he does not mention a precise diagnosis for his illness, he does mention manic-depressive episodes, the old name for bipolarity, as well as bouts of delusion. Although he knows that he will never really get rid of his mental disorders, the painter manages to laugh about them, despite the difficult times they have brought him. He can count on the support of his wife, Elisabeth.
