Description artwork
For this painting "Au revoir", Corinne Malfreyt was inspired by photos of Eadweard Muybridge, the first photographer who at the end of the 19th century decomposed the movements by inventing with Jules-Etienne Marey the photographic gun.
Eadward Muybridge photographs a young naked woman and her farewell gesture. Corinne Malfreyt has changed the order of movement, creating three female characters close to Greek graces. Do they say goodbye with their hands? Is their farewell not rather an invitation? Whatever the case, the composition is beautifully sensual.
The artist dyed sand applied to the canvas. Then she placed her composition in pastel pencil and painted with spalters (large brushes). The blue-gray of the scene becomes white until the overexposure of the third silhouette, which appears white in a halo of light.
