Originally from the Paris region, Bernard completed all of his training there before moving down to Limoges to study sculpture techniques at the School of Decorative Arts for a period of time. His interest then turned towards drawing and painting, for which he received a "classical and discreet" education [from his] architect grandfather". After spending time in various European countries - Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Greece and Spain - Bernard moved to the countryside of Limoges in 1978 where he practiced painting and sculpture. In the mid-eighties, the artist discovered the open spaces of the west coast of America and began a long round trip between France and North America.
