Whether you're looking to decorate your child’s bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, or desk, a modern painting of animals is the perfect touch that adds character, joy, and color to the space.

History of animal painting

Animal art has ancient origins, dating back to prehistoric times when animals were depicted in cave paintings, like those in the Chauvet and Lascaux Caves. In antiquity, artists portrayed both familiar animals and mythological creatures. During the Middle Ages, animals mentioned in the Bible, such as sheep, horses, dogs, foxes, and birds, were commonly depicted. This period also saw the creation of a vast collection of fantastical beasts.

During the Renaissance and Classical periods, horses frequently appeared in paintings, much like dogs, as both animals were closely associated with humans at the time.

While animals were often the subjects of sculptures, this was not the case for paintings. Before the 20th century and the rise of animal-themed canvases, few painters focussed on portraying animals.

Characteristics of animal paintings

Definition

An animal painting is easily identifiable by the presence of at least one recognizable animal, whether a pet like a dog or cat, a domestic animal like a horse or a farm animal, or a wild creature. The range of species and composition possibilities is therefore immense.

However, animal painting only emerged as a distinct genre in modern times. Before that, while animals appeared in various paintings, they were rarely the central subject of the artwork.

Techniques of animal painting

For a long time, animal paintings were created using oil painting techniques. However, with the introduction of acrylic techniques, most animal paintings on canvas are now made with this versatile medium.

Creating an animal painting involves an essential preparatory phase: drawing and sketching. Numerous animal drawings can be found throughout history, particularly in classical art education, as animal postures and expressions provide excellent training for artists.

Famous paintings with animals

Throughout history, many famous artists have painted animals, captivating us with their creations. One of the most famous animal paintings is Piero di Cosimo's "The Forest Fire" (1515). Early 16th-century tapestries depicting "The Lady and the Unicorn" are also key pieces in art history. Additionally, Albrecht Dürer's engraved "Rhinoceros" (1515) and Franck Snyder's "The Dog Fight" stand out from the same period.

Gauguin’s "White Horse" (1898) remains a celebrated masterpiece. In the 20th century, among the most well-known, we encounter Picasso, known for his numerous depictions of birds and bulls, and Foujita, who is famous for his portraits of cats, reflecting his deep affection for them.
