I am moved by landscapes, with their graphic lines, light and their infinitude.
Born in Rennes, Papail has been living for the past few years in the town of Regnéville-sur-Mer in Normandy where she spends her time depicting her favourite subject, the seascapes. She is a trained economist and a stay at home mom who began her training in art at the beginning of the 2000s when she signed up for a class for fun that would enable her to practice various techniques. Her first works, made with watercolours and oil pastels, quickly made her want to try oil painting. In her paintings, Françoise likes to transcribe the myriad of clouds and shards of lights that bathe the coast of the Channel on her canvas, much like a poet who might choose to compose an ode, day after day, to his loved one.
Although she is interested in all artistic movements that participated in writing the history of painting, "there are two great painters that guided her to make the kind of art she makes today: Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) for colour and Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955) for spatula work". Thus, using a luminous and contrasted palette, the artist makes her subjects based on intuition. Papail uses a spatula and is driven by the sensitive potential that comes from the panoramas that she likes to look at. She plays with the chemical composition of the pictorial material, which, depending on the amount of diluent she decides to add to the mix of pigments, makes it possible for her to work on a more or less fresh pictorial surface.
