As an artist, I consider art to be my religion and the universal language that unites us as a people.
Sensitive and creative, Marcelo de León is a Uruguayan artist with a passion for urban landscapes. At school, he discovered the arts in drawing, sculpture and even music workshops. As a teenager, painting became a vocation and he chose to make it his profession. Later, when he moved to Europe, he perfected his style and won the hearts of the public. Marcelo enjoys traveling to discover, and sublimate in his works, the most magnificent cities on the globe. He has exhibited in South America, Canada, Saudi Arabia and France.
Marcelo sensitively depicts the atmosphere and everyday life of the world's most beautiful cities. Whether plein air or with the help of sketches, he first draws with grease pencil on very thick, textured cotton paper. Once his sketch is complete, he wets his canvas before applying watercolor, always ranging from light to darker tones. The artist also restricts his palette to just a few strong colors, so as to explore all possible combinations and nuances. He also uses his water, still tinged with paints, to enrich the whole and create a blur of movement, bringing his urban landscapes to life. One of his references is the great watercolor master Joseph Zbuvick. In his original works, Marcelo pays vibrant tribute to the cities he illustrates, their essence and their culture.
