Description artwork
This unique and original contemporary artwork "Wang Zhaojun" was created by contemporary artist Du Mingxuan.
The artist used watercolor and ink techniques to create this small-format painting on paper in the figurative style.
Wang Zhaojun was a female member of the harem of Han Yuandi, emperor of the Han dynasty (48-33 BC). She was sent by the emperor to marry the Xiongnu chanyu (emperor) in order to establish friendly relations through marriage. She is considered one of the four beauties of ancient China.
In China, Wang Zhaojun's story has been used to support literary and social discourses closely linked to feminine virtues and political agendas. Her images include, but are not limited to, an ideal Confucian woman, a victim of political sacrifice and corruption, a tragic figure of ill-fated love and a courageous cultural heroine.
