My impressionist watercolors combine overview and detail, using "wet and dry" techniques to give depth and emotion.
Hailing from the Algerian port town of Oran, Pierre Gutierrez moved to the other side of the Mediterranean to Marseilles, where he worked in the fields of publishing, design and advertising for several years. In 1998, he moved to the neighbouring town of Carnoux-en-Provence. Over the years, the painter participated in several local art exhibitions that boosted his confidence in his talent and helped him rise in stature in the artistic community. He also loves conducting artistic workshops where he urges his students to explore surrounding areas with him and sketch what they behold on the spot.
It was a happy coincidence that introduced Pierre to the watercolour paintings of the Provençal landscape-painter, Marius Pauzat (1832-1909) and he literally fell under the spell of this work and the aesthetic quality of his creations. Captivated, he began practicing this new painting technique, drawing his themes from the immeasurable beauty of the coastal outskirts of his adoptive region. Backed by invaluable experience in drawing and sketching, Gutierrez adapted to watercolour painting quickly and carved out a niche for himself. Painting became an integral part of his daily life. It was something that he took along with him on his leisurely walks, sometimes capturing the seaside or a shaded terrace or, at other times, a lane flanked by trees on a bright day. Pierre enjoys painting and capturing those landscapes.
