The Contemporary History of Graffiti

Although the recognition of graffiti art dates back to the mid-20th century, its origins trace back to prehistoric times. The iconic cave paintings of Lascaux demonstrate that pictorial practice is ancestral. Early humans used graffiti to mark their passage in isolated locations, alerting different tribes to potential dangers.

The artistic movement reached its peak in the 1970s and 1980s when many famous street artists such as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Andy Warhol showcased their creations to the public.

The first urban art graffiti emerged in the second half of the 20th century in the United States, and more precisely in New York City. Anonymous artists began painting their pseudonyms on walls, subway trains, and throughout public spaces. During the late 1960s, a time of protests against the Vietnam War and racial inequality, this art genre proliferated.

From there, street art paintings became an essential means of political and social expression, often criticized by the public. The waves of repression targeting this movement only strengthened and democratized the movement beyond American borders.
Gradually, graffiti and street art spread worldwide, and new urban expressions, such as stencils and stickers, emerged. The violence and hatred directed towards graffiti artists pushed some to paint on canvases, leading to the inclusion of the genre in reputable exhibitions.

Today, the artistic value of graffiti is widely recognized, with many artists continuing to perpetuate the pop and street culture on canvas.

Banksy and graffiti art

Banksy, one of the world's most famous graffiti artists, has radically transformed the perception of this art. By remaining anonymous, this British street artist has attracted international attention with his provocative and politically charged work.

Each of Banksy’s artworks demonstrates the impact and importance of graffiti art. He constantly challenges conventions, reminding the world that graffiti is not just an act of vandalism but a legitimate form of art capable of turning streets into open-air galleries.

How is Graffiti Art Practiced?

A unique style of painting, graffiti can be done using several techniques.

  • First, graffiti artworks are often realized through aerosol spray cans, some containing acrylic paints. Valérian Lenud exemplifies this trend by depicting large whimsical characters from pop culture using stencils and spray paint.

  • Similarly, it can be created using mixed techniques. For example, artist Graffmat combines spray paint with acrylic to give their works a velvety appearance. Others, like Kikayou, employ various artistic methods to portray their universe: stencils, spray paint, or collages.

Graffiti is a form of art and a personal initiative aiming at delivering a message to as many people as possible. This art form embodies a pictorial technique focused on intention rather than method. When practiced on canvas, it follows the same logic. Artists express themselves using all available pictorial means but on a different medium.
