Half a square meter of freedom

Half a square meter of freedom
Exhibition from October 12 to November 07, 2022

Art et Prison France is an association whose goal is to promote artistic creation in prison and ease reintegration through art and culture. By creating bridges between inmates and society, Art et Prison also provides a new perspective on prison and incarcerated individuals. The work of art plays the poetic mediator where the humanity of each side is expressed. Half a square meter of freedom today presents a set of works from these different competitions, which are organized by the association.

These artworks create a bridge between prison and society to trigger a new perspective on prisoners and, through art and culture, contribute to their reintegration. The artists who were brought together, from around twenty countries, tell a tale of human abyss, of guilt and punishment, of fear and loneliness. They speak of hope, of the desire for freedom, of anguish, of broken family ties. Despite the grip of confinement which leads them to withdraw, prisoners get a new lease on life, due to their artistic practice.

Encourage a new perspective for prisoners

Some of these artworks can be disturbing as they carry dreams. They unveil the vision that the prisoners have of their struggles and their hopes. They portray their anguish through art and showcase the life that slips through their fingers. They project a part of themselves and create artwork, which goes beyond their crimes and reconnect with the outside in a positive manner.

They dive deep into their imagination and their soul and show what lies deep within them, their sensitivity. "Half a Square Meter of Freedom" explores human nature, each man's ability to change and the meaning of artistic creation. This exhibition shows that art can emerge within the most unexpected places. We see a form of art that we never talk about, where human nature appears in all its complexity. .

What is Art et Prison?

Art et Prison is an association whose goal is to promote artistic creation in prison and ease reintegration through art and culture. By creating bridges between inmates and society, Art et Prison also provides a new perspective on prison and incarcerated people. The artwork plays the poetic mediator where humanity of each side is expressed.

To achieve this objective, Art et Prison organizes exhibitions and debate evenings and supports artistic workshops in the prison realm. Since its creation in 2014, Art et Prison has exhibited in France, the collection in question brought together by the German association Art and Prison during its international art competitions are reserved for prisoners. This collection includes artworks, which have been received from prisons on 5 continents and more than 40 countries. Founded in Berlin by Peter Echtermeyer (read his interview here), Art and Prison has just launched its sixth international competition.

During these exhibitions, the artists make us discover a very rather rich palette of feelings, each artwork carries dreams, anxieties and very often hopes: they have caught onto their artistic freedom. They also allow us to catch onto the nuances between prison conditions around the world and carry a universal message of humanity.

Carré d'artistes supports Art and Prison

« Since our creation in 2001, our mission has been to make art accessible to everyone. We remain convinced that art has something special, almost magical, it is this little touch that makes everyday life more beautiful. Today, we want to take things up a notch at our level, help change things. Art has the power to offer new perspectives for those who practice it but also for those who contemplate the latter. We share this strong conviction with Art et Prison association and it is for this reason that we have decided to support them through their actions. »

Stéphanie Tosi, Founder and President at Carré d’artistes.
