A work of art should always teach us that we did not see what we see.
Art has always been part of Bertrand MAHIEU's life. At the age of 8, he learns to play the violin and will thus practice music for many years. He is also interested in painting, which he practices as an amateur. He entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon in 1987, from which he graduated with a first prize in 1991. Two years later, the violinist was recruited by the Rouen Opera as first solo violin. At the same time, he validated in 2004 two years of studies in Art History at the University of Lille. In 2012, he was diagnosed with a disease in his left hand. Bertrand will then have to undergo a series of surgeries following which he will not be able to practice as a violinist. In 2015, he turns to plastic art.
Bertrand MAHIEU is an eclectic artist who explores material to produce something new and get off the beaten track. His first pieces were made from concrete and acrylic paint on a wooden stand but he soon moved into a new style. The artist dabbled in different techniques rusting steel. He would cut up steel sheets and rust them in different ways. He would then use a patina for steel and water to produce shapes and figures. His designs are inspired by the Languedoc landscapes and exude a sense of peace and wellness that you can't help but meditate over. The sea, mountains, lakes, views of the Cévennes, Larzac and Corbières are just a few of the things that inspire Bertrand MAHIEU.
