Architecture is not based on concrete and steel, nor on the elements of the ground. It's about wonder. - Daniel Libeskind
Helen, known by her pseudonym Plyconic, is an East London-based artist with a background in furniture design. Her passion for art blossomed after a captivating visit to London's Barbican Centre, where the interaction of light with architecture deeply inspired her. This decisive moment led her to use plywood, the material of her creations, to capture and recreate the observed play of light.
Plyconic creates 3D architectural artworks using plywood, inspired by post-war architecture and its innovative use of materials. Her process begins by exploring architectural forms that can be translated into layers of wood. After sketching the designs and determining the arrangement of the layers, she laser-cuts the plywood, then methodically assembles them to form relief paintings. This technique, combining practical aesthetics with the beauty of natural wood, offers a soothing and unique visual experience, highlighting the inherent softness of wood grain against the hard lines of modern architecture.
