It was as if there were no names here, as if there were no words. The desert washed everything in its wind, erased everything. The men had the freedom of space in their eyes, their skin was like metal ( J.M.G. Le Clésio)
It was at the age of 12 that Bernard DEVIE discovered an interest in art and particularly in painting. Due to a lack of space in the theater workshop, his school offered him the painting workshop where he quickly blossomed. He then turned to architecture but quickly realized that work and life in an agency did not suit him. Bernard then turned to teaching young children and devoted his evenings to painting and modeling classes. The artist settled in Grenoble in 1974, then in Lyon in 1988 and divides his life between teaching and art. In the middle of the year 2000, he decided to devote himself fully to painting.
Inspired by traditional Japanese imagery and Aztec art, Bernard DEVIE follows in the footsteps of the "elsewhere" and the past. If, at first, he worked on rather vivid colors, he finally opted for an almost monochrome style, with a metallic aspect. His works combine modeling and painting. The artist first works a modeling acrylic coating on each surface of the drawing. He places prints (lace, doily, paper, sponge...) and various traces of comb or spatula. Different layers of paint are then added and varnished to give the final touch to the work.
