I don't want to limit my work to a particular subject or technique in order to preserve a great freedom of interpretation and realization.
Originally from the Paris region, Bernard completed all of his training there before moving down to Limoges to study sculpture techniques at the School of Decorative Arts for a period of time. His interest then turned towards drawing and painting, for which he received a "classical and discreet" education [from his] architect grandfather". After spending time in various European countries - Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Greece and Spain - Bernard moved to the countryside of Limoges in 1978 where he practiced painting and sculpture. In the mid-eighties, the artist discovered the open spaces of the west coast of America and began a long round trip between France and North America.
Enriching himself with the light that bathes the vast American landscapes, Bernard began to translate into painting the luminous changes, inspired by the works of painters Edward Hopper (1882-1967), William Turner (1775- 1851) or John Register (1939-1996). A few years later, he continued his research in the direction of Asia. Mainly executed with a knife, his oil paintings are as much thematic offerings as stylistic experiments, but crafted according to a process, constantly focused on the handling of light and shadows, chiaroscuro. Thus, through his tender and precise movements, subtle moments of life and scenery are born that undoubtedly call for contemplation.
