"I refute all logic; each painting is a revelation for me. Ten years ago, I never would have imagined the canvases I paint today..." Georges Braques
A retired engineer in electronics by trade, Michel Castel has two passions that guide him and that he cultivate with delight: painting and Toulouse. Michel has lived in Haute-Garonne for many years and is a self-taught artist who has managed to keep his practice of drawing and painting alive throughout his entire career. Beginning in the 2000s he decided to devote himself entirely to strengthening his knowledge in visual representations in order to perfect his style and techniques. Michel is attached to daily urban scenes and finds his preferred themes in the perspectives of the "pink city," and is able to use the expression of his art to transmit all the affection he feels for the city.
Michel is enriched by his studies of works by masters of modern painting - such as Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin and even Maurice Utrillo - and by artists such as Michel Jouenne and Daniel Bigaré, and makes his figurative works using acrylic paint, following a process that is singular and characteristic. Therefore, he begins each one of his canvases by applying colours directly to the support, without making any sketches beforehand, in order to create a multi-coloured environment that is harmonious and nuanced. The abstract composition is done with a paintbrush, which "makes it possible for him to combine a design based on nature with his own inventions." He then sketches the buildings and inhabitants with spontaneity, such as the silhouettes he draws freehand, which gives his works a perfectible and authentic style.
