century in a workshop located at the heart of the Var city of Fréjus. Skilled with his hands, he drew very early on and practised this constantly in parallel with his professional cooking career. And from the moment he picked up a paintbrush, Jean-Marie decided never to let go of it, just like his adopted region, Provence.Set up in the small town Roquebrune-sur-Argens since 2008, Jean-Marie opened his workshop gallery there, where he creates and exhibits his works, but also gives painting lessons. Working from oil paints that he delicately applied with a knife, the artist produces landscapes wholly inspired by the surrounding nature – coloured nuances, warm lights together with the represented subjects, which are directly taken from the heart of the very rich Provençal heritage.Modelled on very famous impressionist landscape painters, such as Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) or Claude Monet (1840-1926), Jean-Marie practises his art in symbiosis with nature, contemplating its rhythmic seasonal variations and attempts to capture on the canvas this fugitive, constantly changing state of a familiar landscape. Sketched or photographed, these “moments” are then transposed on the canvas in the complete peace of the workshop. Havens of gentleness and tranquillity saturated by sunlight mixed with marine salt, Jean-Marie’s canvases plunge us into the atmosphere that is so characteristic and highly attractive of towns in the south of France.
