The faces occupy the space and the colors of my paintings and express a vision and a pain in the world, a silent suffering.
Sophie Rocco is a contemporary painter and sculptor and began painting as a child. She taught herself and, at the age of fourteen, she passed the entrance exam to study visual arts at Collège Ganneron in Paris. She then joined the Sornas school of graphic art where she "learned from being in close contact with the masters, the contemporary realist painters who introduced her to drawing and whose painting would inspire her for a long time". She has also been inspired by her unconditional love for culture and museums. This love has been enriched by her many travels all around the world, which have played an essential role in her personal and artistic development. Sophie is filled with a deep sense of isolation from the world around her and has patiently shaped a resolutely singular artistic and visual identity, focused on the exploration of the human soul.
Using various materials and a palette of tones which are linked to the colours of the earth - white, ochre, grey -, Sophie coats, paints, digs, excavates, tears and works the raw material at length, maintaining with it a relationship that is both passionate and carnal. Her practice of sculpture, which is inseparable from her painting, originates from the destruction of her own canvases, an "amalgamation made of gauze, binder and string" that she then sculpts and shapes to produce her abstract three-dimensional works, which are highly emotional. Between painting and sculpture, the artist inspired by realist painters contempoworks to produce a total, free and powerfully expressive form of art, which features delicate characters, sometimes dark, sometimes luminous, born of the union between strength and softness.
